MANY students like to walk or ride their bikes or scooters to school but seven-year-old Hannah Zalisz has a different mode of transport.
The Upper Beaconsfield Primary School student rides her pony, Poncho, the 15 minutes journey to school two days a week.
Her mum Tania said the decision to ride Poncho to school coincided with Cardinia Shire’s Mobile March initiative and it was a good motivator to continue.
“It was a bit of a coincidence,” she said.
“We started just to see if she enjoyed riding the pony but it has been a motivator as well. She is enjoying the attention.”
Each morning, the teacher asks the students who got to school in an active way. Hannah’s classmates become excited to see which days Hannah rode Poncho to school. The teacher even had to add an extra column on the Mobile March spread sheet because ‘Pony Ride’ was not on the list. Tania walks with Hannah on Poncho to school while five-year-old Emily rides the pony home.
Tania said the Mobile March was a great initiative to get kids more active, and also a good way to get tubby Poncho active.
