Red roses signal love

WHILE traditions often change over time, there’s one feature of Valentine’s Day which still remains the same.
The popular red rose is still on the top of buyer’s lists this year and, according to owner of Pakenham Florists Allie Moonan, sales of the red rose are rising as the tradition is becoming more prominent every year.
“Always the red roses, the most traditional flower,” Ms Moonan said.
“Although a few people are buying coloured roses now, too,” she said.
“But the red rose is the “it” flower.”
The florist said, as always, it’s usually the men buying for the women rather than the other way around.
“It’s definitely male dominated,” Ms Moonan said.
“There are an awful lot of deliveries, but a lot come and pick them up on their way home.
“They find out during the day what’s going on and don’t want to go home empty handed.”
The co-owner said it is a crazy time of year but, unfortunately, this time round the weather has made it harder.
“It’s been so hot so it’s made it hard for the flowers and for the growers,” she said.
However, this hasn’t stopped the love struck males around town, with more and more jumping on board each year.
“It definitely seems to be getting bigger and bigger each time,” Ms Moonan said.
