WHEN Amanda Egan heard about the horror crash in Catani that claimed the lives of four members of the Beckett family, she was moved to do something to support the children who were left behind.
This Sunday, she will shave her head at the Pakenham Little Athletics in Toomuc Reserve and participate in a fun run with 11 others to coincide with the fund-raiser already planned at the reserve.
“I wanted to do something different,” she said.
“When I saw what had happened to the Beckett children… I have three boys of my own, and I hope someone would do something for them.
“It just sort of came to me and I wanted to do it.”
In the days leading up to the event, she is hoping to raise $5000 and has been overwhelmed by the response from the community.
“It’s not about the money – it’s about showing support,” she said.
“There are a couple of us shaving our heads.”
Organisers of the family fun day are hoping to raise at least $15,000 for Sam Beckett and his older sister Victoria.
Sam was orphaned when his family car collided with a truck at the corner of Heads and Caldermeade roads last month.
Sam survived the crash, while Victoria was not in the car the time. Veteran police described it as one of the worst crash sites they had seen.
Parents Jade and Stephen Beckett, and two younger siblings Ella, 6, and William, 2, were all killed.
Noble Park truck driver Jobandeep Gill has been charged with culpable driving, failing to stop at a stop sign and other related offences.
He will face court again for a committal mention on 12 June.
Family fun day organisers Carol Clifford and Kerri Adkin are hoping for a big show of support from the local community for the 23 March event.
Local community organisations are helping with the event, which promises to be an entertaining day for all ages.
Activities will kick off at 10am, running until 5pm.
Local businesses have been invited to donate goods for auction, while everyone else is invited to come along and lend a hand.
