Swimming with the Sharks

CASEY Cardinia’s finest netballers joined forces with the best from Nepean and Peninsula on Sunday to finish fourth in their pool in the Victorian State Association Championships held at the State Hockey and Netball Centre.
Coached jointly by Narre Warren’s Kerry Twyford and Crib Point’s Laura Herrington, the MPNFL Sharks started brightly, winning their first two games against some of the finest netballers from around the state.
The Sharks saluted in only one of their remaining five round-robin matches but were more than competitive against some hot opposition.
“The girls had such a great day and played some fantastic netball,” Twyford said.
“They’re normally trying to kill each other on a Saturday but they bonded really well and some strong friendships were developed which is really what it’s all about.”
Ebony McDermott, a 16-year-old goaler from Crib Point, stood out for the Sharks, while her Magpie team-mate, Belinda Keays, provided many highlights through the midcourt.
Ellinbank and District, with Sarah Hogan and Meg Evans in good form, won five of its six matches before winning its semi-final against Ovens and Murray. The girls from Alberton defeated the EDNA team, 12-6 in the grand final.
The MPNFL Sharks team comprised: Coach Kerry Twyford (Narre Warren), coach Laura Herrington (Crib Point), team manager Fiona White (Crib Point), Lynne Moyes (Berwick), Emily Wilson (Berwick), Rebecca Dixon (Somerville), Ebony McDermott (Crib Point), Jasmine Maddocks (Beaconsfield), Sarah McDermott (Berwick), Belinda Keays (Crib Point), Amy Slefendorfas (Crib Point), Tracey Dell (Narre Warren), Adrienne Harris (Crib Point), Michelle Hyndman (Mt Eliza) and Meg Rosser (Mt Eliza).
