AFTER being a target for vandalism and graffiti, the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed has received more than $3000 to upgrade its security measures.
Minister for Crime Prevention Edward O’Donohue visited the men’s shed last Thursday, 11 September, and announced the $3030.
Gembrook MP Brad Battin also attended the grant presentation and said this was an important community facility.
Mr O’Donohue said he hoped the money would deter future crime at the men’s shed.
“Unfortunately, the men’s shed has been the target of graffiti and other vandalism on several occasions,” Mr O’Donohue said.
“This funding will improve the security of the shed, deterring theft by installing a new security system with a high volume siren and flashing strobe light.
“If someone does try to break-in, the new security system will alert local residents and passers-by and allow emergency services to be notified immediately.”
The grant was part of the Napthine Coalition Government’s Community Safety Fund which helps to support community groups, deter crime and promote safety in the area.
“Community safety projects come in many different forms, from installing improved security features to undertaking community awareness activities,” he said.
“Over the past three years, the government has provided more than $3.8 million to fund 588 projects across the state through the Community Safety Fund.”
