Koo Wee Rup has seen its fair share of flooding but local students are learning methods to protect the land from overspill.
As part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program, Woo Wee Rup Secondary College’s Advance Class students have built a drainage system at the recreational space at Koo Wee Rup Community Garden to create usable space for the community.
The centre’s youth development worker Brian Harlow said 24 of the school’s students started working on the swale garden at the start of the year.
“They did a lot of excavation work to draw the water away from where we don’t want it.
“Walking across it would be very damp, but it’s now very usable space,” he said.
The drainage efforts have pleased a lot of young families whose children frequently use the community space.
“We have nature play groups who love to play in the garden,” he said.
As well as opening up play space for local kids, the drainage system also helps to maintain the health of the garden.
“The water just drains through the soil which helps through summer,” Mr Harlow said.
