Once bitten

Cardinia Shire Council has recently introduced the Healthy Bites program where local cafes participate to provide healthier eating options on their menus.
I believe this is a fantastic initiative from the council and as a local mum of three, five and seven-year-old children it is great to have a list of cafes which are providing healthier eating options when we need to stop and refuel.
I recently visited a participating cafe and it had the Healthy Bites sign proudly displayed.
I was very disappointed that a glass, not even a bowl, of fruit salad was $8.50.
The unhealthy option, a smiley face biscuit aimed at children, was considerably cheaper.
I understand that businesses have running costs but this seems to be an opportunity for the cafe to blatantly overcharge and take advantage of this program.
It is a shame that this business was willing to participate and receive the free publicity in your paper that followed and it shows a total disregard of being truly committed to providing healthier and affordable eating options.
I will no longer be attending this cafe and will be trying the other cafes which are participating.
We live in an unhealthy and overweight society and who can blame us when cheeseburgers and fizzy drinks can be bought for a couple of bucks.
