COUNTLESS little legs made many large strides last week as part of a campaign to get kids moving.
Nar Nar Goon Primary School students met at the town’s Memorial Park at 8.30am on Wednesday and made their way to school accompanied by parents, teachers and Cardinia Shire Mayor Graeme Moore.
Some rode their bikes, others hit the pavement but all kids wore a smile as they powered through the streets for Council’s Activate 2014 program.
Kids who were not able to get their way to school in an active way were encouraged to run six laps of the school’s basketball court or two laps of the oval.
The invite was almost too readily taken up by students, sweetened by the fact that each participant went in the draw to win a GoPro action camera, a scooter and a helmet in return for their action-packed morning.
“Actively getting to and/or from school is a great way for children to get their 60 minutes of recommended physical activity each day, which helps to boost their health and well-being,” according to council.
Other schools including Beaconsfield Primary, Kooweerup Primary and Pakenham Hills Primary will also take part in the program across October.
Activate 2014 is an initiative of the VicHealth Walk to School and Streets Ahead program which aims to increase physical activity in children aged 4-12.
