Danger behind the P-plates

HERE’s an important message for young drivers and their families: kids are 30 times more likely to crash when they start driving on their P-plates.
The first six months on the road for a newly licensed driver is the most dangerous of their driving life.
The Traffic Accident Commission say it’s because they’re relatively inexperienced behind the wheel and are more likely to take risks, sometimes without even realising it.
It’s similar to driving at unsafe speeds for the road conditions or deciding to drive after a couple of drinks.
Luckily, there are ways you can help rookie drivers to stay safe.
Talk to them about how they plan to get home, or suggest picking them up after drinking, or even lending them the safer family car when going on long drives.
