THIS week’s event was headlined by the 2014 Medal of Medallists taking place on Saturday in conjunction with Round 1 of the 2014 Club Championships, the November monthly medal and the second round of the Summer Cup.
Tolly Baharis shot a 67 nett off his handicap of 14 to become the first person ever to be back-to-back Medal of Medallist’s champion.
A field of 119 competed on Saturday’s medal event played in warm sunny conditions with the course being presented in outstanding condition. Congratulations to the ground staff for their efforts.
Carl Gilbert came in best with a 62 nett off his handicap of 17 to win the medal and the B-Grade event. Carl also had two nearest the pins (9th and 14th) as well as shooting 39 points at the Cup Day event. Carl’s sudden form improvement can be attributed to some recent coaching from Kevin Whitmore at Witzend Golf.
Meanwhile Ian Hopper shot a nice 65 nett, playing off 11 to win the A-Grade event. Ian’s round included a great approach shot on the par-four 15th to 4 inches giving him an easy birdie. While Alan King shot 66, playing off 30 to take out C Grade.
A field of 61 played on Melbourne Cup day in a single stableford with special guests, retired jockeys David Taggert and Gavin Brady, attending to entertain guests. The high light of the day was Paul (Eddie the eagle man) Govaars smashing a 250 metre drive on the pa-four, second hole to a hand span from the pin giving him yet another eagle. The event was proudly sponsored by Mick and Leesa Matthews whose contribution made for a most successful day.
Thursday’s stableford event featured one of the most outstanding rounds for quite some time when Luke Kneebone playing off his handicap of 15 going around in 73 off the stick giving him an incredible 47 points, way too good for a field of 59 competitors. Next best was his playing partner Robert Taylor coming in with 42 points off his handicap of seven.
