Processors boost buyer numbers

There were approximately 800 export and 800 young cattle penned this week at VLE Pakenham, representing an increase of 1200 head week-on-week.
There was a larger field of buyers operating in a cheaper market as two domestic processors re-entered the market after long absences.
The vealers were not of the same quality as recent sales with the best B muscle calves holding firm while the majority slipped four cents to five cents per kilogram.
Yearling steers and heifers to the trade slipped two cents to three cents as the secondary lines eased seven cents to nine cents per kilogram.
Feeder steers sold six cents per kilogram cheaper.
Grown steers and bullocks eased seven cents to eight cents for most while the Friesian and crossbred manufacturing steers held firm.
The vealers sold from 180 cents to 225 cents for most.
Yearling trade steers made between 182 cents and 199 cents per kilogram and yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 158 cents and 197 cents per kilogram.
Feeder steers made from 162 cents to 189 cents with the heifer portion from 158 cents to 182 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers showing good finish sold from 175 cents to 195 cents per kilogram. Bullocks made between 172 cents and 191 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 160 cents and 165 cents with the crossbred portion between 154 cents and 180 cents per kilogram.
