Market falls as prices rise

There were approximately 750 export and 500 young cattle penned this week at VLE Pakenham, representing a decrease of 80 head week-on-week.
The usual buying group was present and operating in a mixed market, dearer in places.
There was a larger supply of grown steers lacking finish, while yearling cattle of all types were in shorter supply.
A better quality draft of vealers held firm on most sales, although some calves were carrying too much condition and were discounted as a result.
Yearling steers and heifers suited to the trade sold slightly easier as those suited to feed on improved four cents to seven cents per kilogram.
Most grown steers and bullocks sold one cent to two cents dearer, with the best of the 500 kilogram to 600 kilogram drafts lifting eight cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold firm, while the crossbred manufacturing steers improved nine cents per kilogram.
Vealers sold mostly from 180 cents to 217 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 175 cents and 205 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 155 cents and 192 cents per kilogram. Feeder steers made from 160 cents to 185 cents, with the heifer portion from 148 cents to 180 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers sold from 163 cents to 193 cents per kilogram.
Bullocks made between 168 cents and 180 cents per kilogram.
A handful of heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 150 cents and 154 cents, with the crossbred portion between 167 cents and 174 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers made from 149 cents to 179 cents per kilogram.
