WHO is the greenest of them all?
That was the challenge that faced St Margaret’s School’s Year 8 students as they set out to design a sustainable home as part of their energy and envrionment research.
The Berwick students first learnt about green roofs, energy efficient building designs, water recycling, renewable energy and sustainability which they used to design their eco friendly home.
Twenty groups crafted and exhibited their ‘green’ houses at an exhibition judged by Year 7 and 9 students, parents and guest judge Charlene Cornell of Cornell Homes.
Science co-ordinator Dr Rebecca Lim said the exercise was a fun, practical way for students to understand their energy future.
“Fossil fuels – coal, oil and natural gas – at present provide the main sources of energy. With the looming threats of climate change, oil shortages and excessive demands on supplies worldwide, it is important to collectively make the choice to set the path right to a sustainable future,” she said.
