Big win on foreign turf

PAKENHAM BOWLS

Play returned to normal last week for midweek pennant and both Pakenham teams celebrated with wins.
Pakenham 1 (Division 3) travelled to Clayton where they adapted very quickly to the grass, hammering their hosts 83 to 36 and picking up maximum points. Despite this big win they remain in third spot on the ladder, only four points ahead of Noble Park and nine points behind Narre Warren. Next round will see them at home to top-of-the-ladder Mulgrave Country Club.
Pakenham 2 (Division 4) were at home to Cranbourne RSL who sat unbeaten and full of confidence at the top of the ladder. In what was a very satisfying win, Pakenham beat their opponents 72 to 51 collecting 14 of the available 16 points. The Two’s now hold second spot on the ladder, almost two full rounds ahead of Vermont South in third yet almost a full round behind Cranbourne RSL who remain in top spot. Next round will be an away game against Mulgrave Country Club (10th placed).
In what was the start of the reverse rounds of the competition, some results from Saturday pennant were not so pleasing.
Pakenham 1 (Division 1) played at home and might have expected a win against Ringwood, having beaten them on their own turf in Round 1. At the end of what was a wild and windy day however, the visitors prevailed 74 shots to 60 and restricted the home side to only two pennant points. Best rink with a 25 to 13 win were Neil (The Old Man) Drummond (s), Terry (TMAC) McRedmond, Jim Barrie and Graeme (Wildman) Wilde. Despite the loss, Pakenham 1 remains in seventh spot on the ladder only four behind Kingsbury but ironically still 11 ahead of Ringwood. Next round will be away against Fitzroy Victoria (third placed).
Pakenham 2 (Division 2) had an experience they would rather forget just down the road at Cranbourne where they were beaten on all rinks, going down overall 46 to 88 and collecting zero points. Best rink with a close fought 18 to 20 loss were Garry (Crow) Crowley (s), Jim Williams, Kevin (Digger) Goonan and Ash Graham. Round 11 will see the Two’s playing at home against Hampton Park (third placed).
Not all the news was gloomy however as Pakenham’s lower sides continued to shine. The Three’s (Division 6) played SOC at home for a comprehensive 27-shot win and banked 16 of the available 18 points. Best of the winners with a score of 30 to 14 was the rink skipped by Kev (The Prez) Donald with Gian Pianezzola, Anne-Marie Emms and John Coote. They dropped one shot on the first end but hit back with a six on the second and were never headed after that. Pakenham 3 retain third spot on the ladder, now only one point behind Willow Lodge but almost two full rounds ahead of SOC. Next round will be an away game against Vermont South (in eighth).
After big wins at home, Pakenham 4 (Division 7) again demonstrated that they also have what it takes to win away, knocking off top-of-the-ladder Mulgrave Country Club on their own turf. With a score of 83 to 68 Pakenham won on three rinks out of four and moved back to second spot on the ladder, while at the same time consigning Mulgrave from first back to third. It is still very close at the top with only three points between Pakenham and new top of the ladder Narre Warren and a further three back to Mulgrave Country Club. Making a habit of being best rink with a 28 to 11 scorecard were Ron Hawkins (s), Averill Jones, Ringa Hira and Julian Dyer. Their next round will be a home game against the Dandenong Club (currently in fifth).
Winner of the Hi-Lo with number 14 were Graham and Joyce Andrus.
