A ROTUNDA built in memory of a past president at the Rotary Club of Berwick was opened last week.
The late Allan Funston, who was a Charter member at the club as well as secretary of the Berwick Cemetery Trust from 1951 to 1987, was honoured on Wednesday 14 January when Rotarians unveiled the new rotunda named after him.
The rotunda, built by Rotary Club of Berwick members in May last year to mark 50 years with the cemetery trust, was officially opened by the much-loved former member’s 90-year-old widow, Betty.
Allan’s son, Adrian, who was also a past president at the club was there to see his dad’s name etched in stone.
Former president Bruce Shaw highlighted Mr Funston’s many contributions to the community in a speech that opened the formal event.
Members heard about how the well-known dairy farmer, born in 1922, would deliver milk through the area using a horse and cart and his tireless efforts for the Berwick Cemetery Trust.
The rotunda, designed to improve the amenity of the grounds and provide a place for reflection by family, friends and visitors would be most beneficial for the community, was agreed upon by both the Cemetery Trust group as well as Rotary.
City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland attended the opening ceremony which followed the Rotary Club of Berwick’s annual working bee.
