New town, old area

MEMBERS of the Toomuc Valley Residents Association will meet with Cardinia Shire Council today as the process behind recognising the area as an official locality begins.
The Gazette revealed last week council’s ‘push for the town’s official acknowledgement requires consultation to gauge community support.
The idea grew after Ranges Ward councillor Tania Baxter called for Toomuc Valley to be listed on the back of council’s Connect Magazine.
It is the first time that council has sought to create a new locality.
Toomuc Valley Residents Association treasurer Joy Carberry said the idea sounded good in theory but there were details to be thrashed out.
“It’s a fabulous idea,” she said. “It came out of the blue.
“It’s recognition of Toomuc Valley as a unique area.
“We have our own hall, residents association, fire brigade and a fire safety system in times of emergency.
“A number of people put Toomuc Valley as their address, although the area is split between Pakenham and Pakenham Upper.
Association members will meet with council today to “work out the mechanics” of the plan.
Association president Don Petty said the idea had been warmly received.
“We would love to see it happen,” he said.
“Toomuc Valley has a huge history, it is unique. I haven’t heard any opinions that this would be a negative move.”
Central Ward Cr Kate Lempriere said the move was “really vital”.
“2015 shows a strong community aiming to protect, restore and improve the valley for the residents and the environment,” she said.
“Toomuc Valley is very much a place. It has a long history. It’s necessary to have it gazetted.”
