FAMILY, friends and former team mates of the late Steve Vivian gathered at the Pakenham Cricket Club on Sunday for the playing of the Steve Vivian Memorial Shield.
The annual match played between Pakenham and Devon Meadows is played in honour of the former champion of both clubs.
Vivian was a premiership player at Devon Meadows and a premiership coach at Pakenham where he was also voted the competition’s A Grade Player of the Year for the 1982-83 season.
The match is usually played between the club’s senior teams but, with Pakenham in Premier Division and the Panthers in District Division, the shield was this year decided by a T20 contest at Toomuc Reserve.
The day kicked off with an exciting under-15 curtain-raiser at 11am, where Devon Meadows took the prize, before the senior stars stepped out at 2pm.
Batting first, Devon Meadows made 4/128 from its 20 overs before Country Week star Russ Lehman led the Lions to victory, the home-side scoring 3/130 with one over remaining.
E-Grade skipper David Searle bowled beautifully for the Lions while Lehman was a standout choice as man-of-the-match with another stylish all-round performance.
Steve Vivian’s brother Mark presented the awards.
