The Masters
Seven Mate – this time every year

THERE may not be many of us, but for fans of televised golf, the Masters is the highlight of the viewing year.
That’s right, men in colourful slacks walking around a park hitting a stationary ball is television heaven for some among us.
The allure of the Masters is on many levels.
With one of the most coveted trophies in world sport on offer, it ticks the box of being a super competitive, extremely tense contest. The visuals of the Masters are another attraction. It is simply a beautiful backdrop on which to play out the annual theatre of the tournament.
Like the Tour de France, the Masters makes you want to go buy a plane ticket and fly straight over to Augusta, Georgia, which is clearly some sort of heaven on Earth where the grass is always greener and the greens are always grassier.
Lastly, the broadcast is as good as televised sport gets. Australian television networks used to boast that they provided the best golf coverage in the world. It was an idle boast.
CBS sports never misses a crucial shot, never loses the ball in flight and always seems to have the right angle on a crucial putt.
The commendatory is understated, although they sometimes waffle a bit about the glory and history of the tournament.
If you are going to invest hours in a sport that is as exciting as watching grass grow, then make sure it’s Augusta grass you are watching.
