Pompey Elliott unveiled the tribute

ONE of Australia’s most revered figures of World War I, Brigadier General Pompey Elliott, braved terrible weather conditions to officially unveil the Upper Beaconsfield War Memorial on Saturday 15 May 1920.
He was introduced by Lietenant Colonel George Hodges Knox, a prominent resident of Upper Beaconsfield at the time, who later moved to Ferntree Gully and, after years of civil service, had the City of Knox named in his honour.
The Pakenham Gazette reported on the ceremony in its Friday 21 May edition.
“On Saturday afternoon last under adverse weather conditions General Elliott CB, CMG, DSO performed the unveiling of a handsome granite monument to the memory of those who gave their lives to liberty,” the report read. “The Brigadier General was introduced by Lieutenant Colonel GH Knox CMG, who referred to the gallant service rendered by the fallen soldiers.
“Prayer was offered by the Rev James Wilson, followed by praise. Then the unveiling by the Brigadier General took place, after which the Last Post was sounded by Bugler Peters.”
