A GROUP of concerned residents are appealing to Casey Council to reconsider a proposed Berwick childcare centre.
The site concerned is in close proximity to the roundabout connecting Harkaway Road with Ernst Wanke Road, an already heavily travelled area, particularly in peak periods.
City of Casey Planning manager Duncan Turner confirmed that a planning application has been received by council to convert a residential dwelling at 56A Harkaway Road into a childcare centre, accommodating 73 children and 15 staff.
Resident Dale Allen says she believes the proposed location of the centre would pose a threat to road-users as well as those entering and exiting the centre.
“We’re concerned that even more cars could be channelled into this tight bend, all containing children,” she said.
“Those that walk to the site will do so without the aid of pedestrian crossings and cross this road at a section with open drains and no curb and channel.”
The area was previously identified as a site of concern, and in 2013 the roundabout was constructed to ease congestion and improve safety. The works were funded through the Australian Government’s ‘Black Spot’ program.
The roundabout is used as a major entry point to the expanding Berwick Township.
Ms Allen believes that the positioning of the childcare centre will significantly increase traffic.
“No amount of restrictions can control the amount of cars which will pool into this area should the childcare centre be approved,” she said.
“The amount of time and financial outlay put into constructing the roundabout, sanctioned by previous Casey councillors, could now be compromised to satisfy the request of one commercial venture.“
Mr Turner advised that the application includes 20 car spaces and three drop-off bays.
The application has been advertised for public comment and council has received 142 submissions in relation to the issue.
A decision will be made by council after the application and submissions are reported to a future Planning Committee Meeting.
