Conference aims to connect

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM

COMMUNITY groups, social entrepreneurs, activists and creatives will come together to celebrate the art of connection later this month.
Presented by the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire Council, Baw Baw and Yarra Ranges Council, ‘Fusion’ will provide an opportunity to connect and inspire those within the arts and community sectors.
The event is referred to as an ‘unconference’ for its focus on the participation and input on attendees. Those present will share their expertise and experiences with each other, offering the opportunity for an unfiltered exchange of ideas. The official opening of ‘Fusion’ will be held on Friday 15 May, when six selected arts professionals will present in ‘Pecha Kucha’ style – a presentation style where 20 slides each shown for 20 seconds accompany speakers.
The ‘unconference’ will be held from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 16 May.
A series of workshops will be held throughout the day, each with a strong focus on attendee participation. Those planning to attend can come prepared to run a session, or may become inspired on the day.
Guest speakers at the event include Dr Laura Brearley, artistic director of the Shearwater Festival on Phillip Island; Stephanie Clark, who has had strong involvement with multiple theatre companies around Warragul; Dr Ross Farnell, executive director at Burrinja in Upwey and David Bell, designer and constructer of large scale, 3D public art.
Both events will be held at The Old Cheese Factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick.
An all-access ticket to the Fusion unconference may be purchased for $25. Contact City of Casey at arts@casey.vic.gov.au or www.casey.vic.gov.au/fusion for more information on how to book.
