FROM newsagencies to classrooms, last week’s souvenir edition of the Pakenham-Berwick Gazette was well received by many – including Kooweerup Secondary School which will use the 100-page special edition to spread stories of heroism, tragedy and triumph experienced by local Anzacs.
The school purchased 50 copies of the Anzac tribute which will be used by Year-9 and 10 students to unearth the local impact of war as part of their Australian History curriculum.
Assistant principal and history teacher Leonie McGinley expects students will better engage with the history of war in the area knowing they lived, and were perhaps not too dissimilar to the men and women who left the local area to serve the nation.
“There is a great benefit in teaching about local stories.
“When you buy books about Gallipoli or the Anzac experience, they are good – but there is no local experience,” Ms McGinley said.
“It is much more meaningful for students to understand the local experiences.”
The double class set will be located in the school’s library for students and families.
Several newsagencies across the region also had to be replenished with souvenir copies of the Pakenham-Berwick Gazette.
