Homeless issue ‘critical’

By LIA SPENCER

CARDINIA Council has been doing its part to try and tackle a ‘critical’ homeless issue in Pakenham and surrounds.
“Homelessness and the shortage of appropriate housing is a critical social issue for Cardinia Shire,” Cardinia Shire spokesman Paul Dunlop told the Gazette.
“Currently, there are limited housing options for those experiencing financial hardship or presenting with crisis and emergency situations, and local service providers are struggling to provide any short, long or sustainable rental support.
“Council shares community concerns about the growing issue of homelessness in Cardinia Shire, and we are taking what action we can to improve living conditions for residents at risk,” Mr Dunlop said.
He said these activities included creating partnerships with other service providers and working with other levels of government to provide support and programs.
Council’s Housing Strategy Strategic Plan 2013-’18 outlines a commitment to:
Collect and monitor data on emerging housing needs and trends within Cardinia Shire (see attachment – this action has been completed)
Identify and propose land parcels that could be developed for Social Housing
Liaise with local service providers to identify the level of need for social housing in the municipality and the required housing types and locations.
Advocate for housing service providers to invest in Cardinia Shire.
Initiate discussions with Social Housing Providers to invest in the shire.
Explore partnership opportunities with Social Housing Providers and land developers
Explore funding opportunities and models to precipitate the development of Social Housing.
Encourage the provision of accessible and affordable housing to provide for people with disabilities
