Impressions of depression

A LOT of people know about bits and pieces of Geoff Miller’s life.
They probably know he’s a proud father of five including three boys at the Kooweerup football and cricket clubs, Ben, Tim and Cody.
They might know that he was a former listed footy player at St Kilda in the days of the iconic Trevor Barker.
But they probably don’t know about his battle with chronic bipolar depression.
Over the next two weeks in the Beer O’Clock segment of the Gazette, Geoff talks about some of the special highs – such as taking 5/9 and scoring 150 on the cricket field the same day he met the love of his life, Tania.
But he also talks about his illness.
“Sometimes things do get on top and something might happen that will throw you over the edge a bit,” he explains.
“I don’t know if people want to know about it or not, but it’s tough.
“The people who probably don’t understand it are sometimes the people closest to you – I don’t even know if the kids understand it that well.”
Geoff’s kids mean the world to him – and some of his favourite sporting memories are of watching them, rather than of him actually playing.
Yet they were still more than willing to spill the beans to the Gazette one or two hilarious stories about their old man – like the time he was forced to run naked down the main street of Murray Bridge in South Australia!
