Icon set to shut

Dot Green, Shirley King, Dorothy Clarke and Diana Goodbody are hoping new members will save the Bunyip Red Cross branch.

DWINDLING numbers may force a historic Bunyip icon to shut its doors later this year.
The Bunyip Branch of the Red Cross has scaled back its activities to only “friendship” meetings and may be officially wound up at its August meeting.
Along with many others around Australia, the branch was established in 1914, to assist the World War I effort.
During periods of war, local members would knit for soldiers and hold fund-raisers such as garden parties, street stalls, fashion parades and run an Opportunity Shop.
President Shirley King says the branch is hoping to recruit some younger volunteers who could take over its operation.
“We do have people in our community who don’t have an overload of commitments who would be welcome to take up the banner and keep our very worthwhile and much-respected organisation viable again,” she said.
Although the Red Cross may no longer operate, the members will ensure the community spirit remains alive.
“Even though the Bunyip branch may fold, all of our members will continue to maintain their membership in the Red Cross as individuals.
“For an organisation who has contributed so much to the needy in our local community for over 100 years, it would be a terrible shame to close as there is still a need for the Red Cross in our district.”
In November 2014, the branch received a Certificate of Commendation from the Australian Red Cross for providing care and service to so many for the past 100 years.
Local associations with the Red Cross are many.
Grace Kellaway is 96 years old and has been a member for over 70 years. She recalls the Red Cross having a consistently strong involvement in the local community.
“We would drive patients to medical appointments if they were too sick to go by themselves.
“These days people lead busy lifestyles with usually both husband and wife working which leaves them very little time for activities other than family.”
