THERE’S more than one good reason to sponsor Matthew Curran when he takes on the MS Walk and Fun Run this weekend.
If the Pakenham resident receives $1million in donations, he vows to “arrange a Viking shop and take a crew to plunder Tasmania’s town of Lindisfarne.”
He’s also been living with Multiple Sclerosis for the last 10 years, has two sisters with the same condition and lost his grandfather due to complications from MS.
He has taken part in the run for six consecutive years, and three years ago started walking in a Viking costume for further donations.
“Every year I’ve been putting out a list of goals and then there will be something I’ll do at each milestone – everything from different parts of my costume to eating pickled herring before the run,” he said.
“My two kids do it in Viking outfits as well and my whole family takes part. It’s something that we can do together for great cause.”
As part of his team ‘Woolfe Gang and Co’, Matthew is hoping to raise as much as possible before the event. In previous years, he has raised over $3500.
Almost 12,000 people are expected to take part in the annual fund-raiser, which takes place simultaneously in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. Participants in the Melbourne event can complete either a 5km or 10km course around Albert Park Lake.
MS is the most common neurological condition affecting young adults. It causes the brain to stop communicating with the rest of the body, leading to extreme fatigue, chronic pain, vision, cognitive, continence and mobility issues.
