TOOMUC CFA recognised a dozen special volunteers for their long-term contribution to the safety of the community at their recent anniversary celebration.
The brigade, currently 30-members strong, celebrated its 70th year anniversary on Saturday 30 May as well as handed out a range of well-earned awards to the hard-working, local heroes.
Retired Captain of 10 years, John Ferrari was awarded the prestigious National Medal with 1st Clasp along with the VFBV 30-year Gold Star award.
The loyal volunteer of 33 years currently fills Toomuc Fire Brigade’s position of 1st Lieutenant, succeeded by current Captain Brad Kelly who described the ceremony as a “proud” night.
The Outstanding Service award was handed to Stewart McLean, whose commitment to the community rivals no other having attended 90 per cent of call outs over the past year.
His response rate to emergency call outs has been largely consistent since becoming a CFA member a few years ago, according to Captain Kelly who dubbed Mr McLean a “role model” to other members.
“Stewy is a fantastic member. It’s very rare that he doesn’t make it to the truck. He literally drops everything and responds. He is a fantastic member of the brigade,” Captain Kelly said.
Service awards were also handed out to a number of committed members.
Andrew Ramage was recognised for 25 years’ service, while Neil Rennardson received a token of appreciation for 15 years serving the community.
Travis Hale, Pieter Ling, Terry Simpson and Andrew Ferrari received their 10-year service award while Mark Burns, William Tangipo and Blake Sokaluk were recognised for five years with the brigade.
Mr Sokaluk, who wears many hats at the local CFA group, including secretary, treasurer, OH&S officer as well as being in charge of community engagement and fund-raising, was also presented with the brigade’s Above and Beyond award.
From July, he will become the brigade’s 4th Lieutenant.
“I moved out to Pakenham six years ago. I joined to make new friends and put something back into the community. It feels good to be able to help people and engage with everyone,” he said.
Toomuc Fire Brigade currently responds to in excess of 160 emergencies each year.
Captain Kelly said since he joined 10 years ago, he had seen the emergency group grow significantly.
“I have seen the brigade grow significantly in size from about 12 active members to the 30 we have today,” citing a number of active female fire-fighters in their ranks.
The 70th anniversary awards night was attended by a number of dignitaries including Deputy Chief CFA John Haynes, VFBV State vice-president Nev Jones, CFA Operations officer Jime Dore and CFA Group Officer Wayne Nutting.
Member for Gembrook Brad Battin and Cardinia Shire Mayor Leticia Wilmot were also there to share in the brigade’s monumental awards celebration.
