Arrival tales of survival

LIVING and Learning Pakenham delivered a lunchtime event last week during Refugee Week.
The event sought to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and to celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.
This year’s lunch was attended by more than 50 residents and Cardinia shire’s Mayor and three councillors.
Sheelagh Purdon from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) was the guest speaker.
She has worked with refugees and asylum seekers for the past 10 years in Australia and New Zealand in a range of roles and now trains community speakers to enable them to tell their stories.
Three of Living and Learning’s English students from refugee background shared their stories about their journeys to Australia.
