Pawned off stolen DVDs

A MOTHER has pleaded guilty to pawning off more than $3000 worth of stolen DVDs to a Pakenham business.
Sarah Ward, 28, faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday accused of trading in 152 DVDs over 18 transactions in a six-month period at Cash Converters.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Glenn Horman said the average sale value of the DVDs was $20 each – making a total of more than $3000.
Ward was also charged with stealing 11 DVDs – worth a total of $330 – from a Coles supermarket in Pakenham on 27 June.
Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi said Ward’s prior convictions included several driving offences and one deception charge – for using stolen number plates in 2012.
Ward was supported by a carer due to a severe and chronic medical affliction.
“When she has her son, her carer has to be with her the whole time.”
Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Ward that a community-based order would be “too difficult” for her; she had to focus on her health and her child.
“You have to manage this the best you can. The first thing is – not going to court.”
Ward was fined $2000.
