A POTENTIALLY harmful type of algae detected in Berwick has prompted Melbourne Water to issue a message of warning to locals.
Signs displayed at the Greaves Road retarding basin, located in the Berwick Springs estate, alert visitors to the area to blue-green algae found in the water.
The algae, which occurs in waterways typically during the warmer months, is caused by an accumulation of nutrients and poses a threat to humans or animals who come into contact with it.
Melbourne Water’s acting Waterways Manager (Southeast region) Jarrod Mitchell said users should be aware of the danger.
“People should avoid contact with the water and make sure that it does not come into contact with their skin or eyes,” he said.
“Pet owners are advised to take similar precautions and prevent their animals from entering the water or from drinking it.”
Mr Mitchell said that Melbourne Water was currently working with Casey Council to manage the algae bloom, and that people should also avoid eating fish from the basin during the outbreak and for three weeks after it has been given the all clear.
“We will be sampling the water regularly and keeping a close watch on the problem,” he said.
“Signs have been erected around the lake to warn people of the potential hazards.”
