Police seek bin firebug

By ANEEKA SIMONIS

POLICE are desperate to locate Pakenham’s menacing fire bug, thought to be responsible for a series of suspiciously lit blazes.
Urgent witness pleas have been made by Cardinia’s Crime Investigation Unit in a bid to stop the fire setter in their tracks during the high fire danger period.
CIU Detective Senior Sergeant said six bins were set alight in the space of four days at the end of December.
The bins were located in Main Street, Ahern Road, Riviera Drive and Treloar Lane in Pakenham over the hot four-day period.
Each of the fires were quickly contained, but police have issued strong concerns one may get out of control if the alleged fire bug goes uncaught.
“It is a high fire danger period so there is a potential for fires to get out of control,” Det Snr Sgt Smith said.
“It’s a major concern for us this time of year.”
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
