EVERGREEN Retirement Village in Pakenham is raising funds for Southern Cross Kids Camps by holding a fund-raising auction and morning tea.
The event will be held on Thursday 4 February, commencing with morning tea at 10.30am, and is being organised by Lloyd and Robyn Thomas who moved into the village in early 2015.
Lloyd and Robyn have attended 17 Southern Cross Kids Camps and support the camps as ‘grandma’ and ‘grandpa’.
Southern Cross Kids Camps enables boys and girls who are victims of abuse to attend a five-day camp which helps them to overcome the effects of abuse, neglect and abandonment.
Sharyn at Evergreen said the residents were eager to support the cause.
“When we got to know Lloyd and Robyn shortly after they moved in, we were greatly impacted by the tireless work they have been doing for this wonderful charity,” she said.
“We wanted to show our support for the charity and offered to assist Robyn and Lloyd by making the club house available and assisting them with providing a fun morning with lots of prizes to be auctioned and raffled.”
Lloyd said both he and Robyn had thoroughly enjoyed their time as grandparents at the camp.
“Many of the children who attend camps are living in care, and do not have the opportunity to be in contact with grandparents,” she said.
“Our role is very special as we get to be grandparents for a week to some 35 children at each camp.
“We know that through provision of a safe environment, we are giving children positive reinforcement that they are valuable, therefore making a difference to the negative impact abuse has had on them.”
Everyone is welcome to come to the morning tea and entry is $5.
