Brush up on clean-up

Judy Smith and friends are ready to clean up.

COME Sunday 6 March, a team of volunteers armed with gloves and garbage bags will descend on Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna Reserve.
Members of the Friends of Cardinia Creek will spend the morning picking up rubbish and removing it from the reserve.
The scene in Upper Beaconsfield will be similar in hundreds of other parks and reserves around the country for Clean Up Australia Day, an annual event that encourages locals to clean up and conserve their environment.
Friends of Cardinia Creek member Judy Smith said the group has been participating in the event for the past 18 years.
“Last year we had 34 people come down and collect 45 bags of rubbish, so it does make a real difference in the reserve,” she said.
Though Clean Up Australia Day draws a crowd, Judy makes a habit of cleaning up the reserve throughout the year.
At least twice a week, she walks up and down Emerald-Beaconsfield Road to remove rubbish.
This will be the 18th Clean Up Australia Day hosted by the Friends of Cardinia Creek.
