CARDINIA Shire Council is encouraging students to lace up their runners, hop on their scooter and strap on their helmets to get to school during March.
This is the sixth year the council has promoted Mobile March.
Students can get active, have fun and win great prizes for their school. The most active school in the shire will win the ‘Streets Ahead’ cup.
Each day, teachers at participating primary schools will tally the students who were active on their way to school. All participating schools that complete the class tallies will receive a scooter and helmet as a prize. Fifteen schools registered and more than 5000 getting students involved.
The council’s Active Children officer Kate Beveridge said getting to school in an active way was great for kids to get active and social with their peers.
“We would like to encourage children to walk, ride, scoot or skate to school and contribute to the recommended one hour a day of physical activity, rather than just jumping in the car. Students can form bonds with their classmates, enjoy the fresh air and teachers will find their students more alert and attentive as a result of being active,” Ms Beveridge said.
For schools where active travel is a challenge, teachers are encouraged to support children to participate in laps around the football ovals or basketball courts, so that everyone can get active.
