PAKENHAM Paralympic hero Matt Lewis is back on home turf, bringing home gold from his team’s stellar rugby victory of the United States.
The 29-year-old won gold with his team, the Steelers Wheelchair Rugby team, at the Rio Paralympics, defeating America by a single point.
The team took out the nail-biting 59-58 win in double overtime.
Matt’s sister Linda Lewis, who also lives in Pakenham, says she’s incredibly proud of her brother who touched down on home soil on Wednesday 21 September.
The Paralympian almost died in a horrific backyard explosion in Cannons Creek in 2011.
At 24, he lost fingers, both of his legs and was in an induced coma for over a month after an at-home bomb experiment went terribly wrong.
After a lengthy rehabilitation process, Matt picked up a rugby ball – and the rest is history.
