KATHIE Thomas’ nature photography will fittingly be on display in a natural setting in Gembrook later this month among other local works.
The 10-acre private botanic garden will showcase a variety of paintings, sculptures, mosaics, photography, botanical art pieces and craft as part of this year’s Art in the Garden.
Selby photographer Kathie Thomas described herself as a “keen gardener” and said her photography focused heavily on nature, particularly gardens and wildlife.
“I love nothing more than to photograph new plants, new flowers and the progress my garden is making throughout all seasons,” she said.
“A photo of a blue banded bee that I took in spring 2009 led me on a path of discovery.
“I began researching to find out what kind of bee it was. I’ve actually learnt lots of things since that day and can now name almost every bird in this region and identify it by its call, too.
“Apart from improving my skills in photography, I’ve learnt so much more about the environment in which I live. I explore it constantly and have walked and driven to many places simply for the pleasure of photographing it and get excited when I discover a ‘new’ bird or something I’d not seen before.
“Photography’s become a passionate obsession. My camera has really helped me see things that you wouldn’t usually notice.”
The award-winning Toomuc Valley Art Group will be displaying a range of their artworks and visitors will be able to see the artists at work.
“We encourage and inspire each other and occasionally bring in other artists to demonstrate their unique styles and skills,” group founder Sue Robertson said.
“The idea of spending a day with so many and varied artists appeals to our creative side, and to be stimulated by other like-minded people is exciting.”
Pakenham artist Jenni Ivins will also facilitate a collaborative community mind, drawing on which people can leave their own mark, either drawing something new or adding to lines already on the picture like Mr Squiggle.
There will be art workshops, demonstrations, a Mad Hatters tea party, garden tour, music, a sausage sizzle and free activities for the kids including a Teddy Bear picnic.
Art in the Garden is from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 23 October at 24 Blackwood Lane, Gembrook.
Tickets cost $15 per adult, $10 per child and $25 for a family pass, with all profits donated to the not-for-profit Cardinia Art Society.
