Buyers pick and choose their targets

THERE were approximately 580 export and 500 young cattle penned representing an increase of 220 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The regular group of buyers was present and operating more selectively in a softer market.
Quality improved with a better selection of prime cattle throughout and most categories weighing heavier on average.
Heavy weight vealers sold from mostly 10 cents up to 20 cents per kilogram cheaper with many in the draft in excess of 400kg.
Yearling trade cattle eased five cents to 12 cents for most and more on some isolated sales.
Grown steers sold firm for most while the bullocks eased by five cents.
Heavy weight bullocks in excess of 750kg held firm, and heavy weight vealers suited to butcher orders sold from 330 cents to 370 cents for most.
Yearling trade steers made between 322 cents and 354 cents and yearling heifers to the trade sold between 280 cents and 330 cents.
Grown steers made from 300 cents to 324 cents.
Bullocks sold from 300 cents to 316 cents.
Heavy weight bullocks made between 290 cents and 306 cents, heavy weight grown heifers sold between 268 cents and 304 cents, and heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers made from 276 cents to 306 cents.
The next store sale is on Thursday 1 December 2016 at 10am.
The last prime sale for the year is on Monday 19 December, the last export, calf, sheep and pig sale is on Tuesday 20 December and the last store sale is on Thursday 15 December.
The first prime sale in the new year is on Monday 9 January, the first export sale is on Tuesday 10 January and the first store sale is on Thursday 12 January.
The calf, sheep and pig sales are held on the first Tuesday of the month and the first one for the new year will be held on Tuesday 7 February 2017.
