Yard numbers continue to ease

THERE was an easing in numbers again last week for the weekly fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, with 263 head yarded.
Extra bullocks were penned and sold to firm demand with no movement in the average for the week, heifer numbers were down and easier quality pulled the average for heifers back around 8 per cent.
Demand for steers slipped a little during the week with re-stockers not as evident as in recent weeks and some lighter secondary steers pulled values back.
Although vealer numbers were lighter and the top slipped marginally, quality in the better pens was more even, keeping the better prices more consistent over this section of the sale, with only a few secondary pens on offer, this week’s yard average lifted nine cents to 316.3 cents.
Thirteen bullocks made to 308 cents, up three cents, and averaged 280 cents, firm, 36 heifers made to 340 cents, back six cents, and averaged 275.7 cents, back 20 cents, 49 steers made to 342.2 cents, back two cents, and averaged 291.3 cents, back 22 cents, and 165 veal made to 390.6 cents, back five cents and averaged 346.5 cents, up 28 cents.
On Thursday numbers were also back with 225 head present.
Bulls sold to stronger demand and topped at 289.2 cents, up five cents on last week and the bull average was four cents better at 262.8 cents for 22 head.
Cows remained steady in demand with the best price up 10 cents on last sale at 288.6 cents, with the average firm at 214.9 cents.
The yard average for the week was steady at 221.3 cents.
The draw for 30 November and 1 December is: 1, SEJ; 2, Landmark; 3, Scotts; 4, Gibbon; 5, Elders.
