PAKENHAM’S Moira Ryde has been recognised for her years of dedication to making a meaningful difference to the lives of athletes with an intellectual disability.
She was awarded a Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champion service award for freely giving her time to support her community, and was congratulated at a ceremony at Government House on Sunday 4 December.
Moira has been part of the fabric of Special Olympics for 30 years and has a long list of achievements in providing sport and competition for people with disabilities.
She has held many roles across all levels of the organisation from grassroots volunteering to international representation.
These include state Summer and Winter Games manager (1993-2003), coaching state manager, head coach for four National Games, state treasurer, and vice-chair of the state board, among many others.
In a recent interview with the Gazette, Moira described the Special Olympics as an opportunity for athletes who don’t usually receive such publicity to shine.
“To me these are forgotten sportspeople. They go through enormous hurdles to get to where they are,” she said.
“Special Olympics offer all levels of ability the chance to compete, and it’s very rewarding.”
In a statement released by the Office of the Premier of Victoria, Moira was described as a “wonderful example of passion and commitment”.
“She is patient and is always willing to help and assist clubs and other volunteers in all things Special Olympics,” the statement read.
“Her understanding of sport and what athletes need to grow and develop within Special Olympics highlight the respect she has garnered right across the organisation.
“She is held to the highest esteem by volunteers and staff alike. Her contribution, knowledge, wisdom and continuing time commitment makes her a central figure within Special Olympics and her advice is continually sought after on a range of topics.”
