Empowering women through social inclusion, connecting women through friendship – that’s the aim of a Friendship Café which will be opening soon in Pakenham.
Launching on 20 April, the informal weekly catch-up hopes to create a sense of belonging for women who are new to the area or for those who have found themselves isolated through the demands of family.
Project officer Jolene Stewart said with Cardinia shire a recognised growth corridor, there were a lot of women moving to the area without any social connections.
That’s where the Friendship Cafe steps in.
“This is a place for women, by women,” Ms Stewart said.
“It’s a place to have a friendly informal chat in the hope of creating lasting friendships and social connections.”
Ms Stewart said it was important that the service reached as many women as possible from all different backgrounds.
“Friendships and connections are extremely important, even more so when moving to a new area,” Ms Stewart said.
“A lot arrive scared and lonely. Their children go to school and adapt but the mothers are at home isolated from the community.”
The group will meet weekly on Thursday’s at Living Learning Pakenham for a cuppa and a chat.
As areas of opportunity are uncovered the service will expand to include group outings, training and informational sessions.
Ms Stewart said with the help of government funding – which is yet to be acquired – the opportunities would be endless.
“I want to offer the service but I want the women to shape it into what it is they want,” she said.
“I really want to see them take control of what they want, what they need for their lives here.”
The Women’s Friendship Cafe is open to women of all ages, backgrounds and cultures.
Participants will meet on Thursdays from 9am to noon from 20 April at Living Learning Pakenham, 6b Henry Street.
Volunteers are also being sought to help run the program.
