A bonfire in Lang Lang that sparked a peat fire has prompted police and the CFA to call on all Cardinia residents to be careful.
CFA Operations Officer Jim Dore said CFA members attended the fire at Samuel Lane in Lang Lang on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March.
“We have a lot of trouble in that area with peat,” he said.
Pakenham Police Senior Sergeant Nathan Prowd said “people must have control of their fires”.
With fire restrictions lifted on Monday 27 March the police and the CFA told the Gazette it was important for Cardinia residents to take note of the Council Open Burn Policy.
The policy was updated in July 2016 following public consultation.
The updates saw Cardinia shire divided into ‘Burn off areas’ and ‘No burn off areas,’ as well as amendments to burn off conditions and specific conditions for burn off on properties larger than 20 hectares to better manage vegetation.
