Police are urging rural property owners to secure petrol and fuel reserves after a spate of thefts in Cardinia.
Sergeant David Fyfe said farmers and other property owners should review their storage arrangements and make sure stores are secure.
“People should keep their supplies under lock and key, even if they haven’t had to do so in the past,” he said.
“As suburbia continues to sprawl closer to rural areas incidents of this type are likely to increase.”
