Cardinia Shire Council is turning to the community for inspiration to name the under-construction Deep Creek Reserve.
When completed, the Pakenham reserve will be home to an indigenous nursery, community wetlands and walking paths and the largest all-abilities playground in the shire.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Brett Owen was excited about the competition, saying it allowed the community to have some ownership over the reserve.
“This reserve will be a lively community hub, with so much to see and do, and help people to connect with their community, and the naming competition is a great opportunity for the local community to be involved in this project”, Cr Owen said.
“You can participate in the competition in two ways – submit your idea on what you would call the park and why, or vote for a name that has already been suggested. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the different ideas that are put forward by our community.”
Entries will close at 5pm, Friday 24 November 2017. Submissions will assist the council to select a name for the reserve.
Participants are encouraged to consider the following when submitting ideas and voting:
Make sure the name of the park is easy to pronounce, is three words or less, excluding Aboriginal language names; makes sense to the Cardinia Shire community and visitors and reflects the history of the area and/or known locations nearby.
If the proposed name is in memory of someone or a family, they should be highly regarded by the community and have some connection to the location.
