Debruin’s Bakery in Longwarry has been crowned the home of the Best Regional Sausage Roll in Victoria by Triple J’s radio breakfast hosts Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton.
As part of the Triple J Goes Bush week, aimed at spotlighting stories outside of life’s urban centres, the duo set out to find the best of the best in the region.
They sampled sausage rolls from Debruin’s Bakery, Nick’s Bakehouse in Drouin, Yarragon Country Style Bakery, Gracie’s Bakery in Trafalgar and Moe Hot Bread, after which Debruin’s was declared the winner.
“That’s actually one of the best sausage rolls I’ve ever had,” radio host Liam Stapleton said.
The win comes as no surprise to the experienced family who have been in the bakery business for three generations.
“I was working in the bakery with my Dad when I was about 10 years old and now my son Matt works for me.
“We’ve always been in the bakery business, it’s almost second nature to us now,” bakery proprietor Wayne Debruin said.
“When we saw a vacant lot for sale here in Longwarry we decided to build from scratch.
“Everyone who works here is family.”
A usual start to the working day is around 3am for the dedicated Debruins, who get up six days a week to bake fresh on-site.
“We make absolutely everything in house, fresh every day. That’s why people love us, because our food is so fresh and authentic,” third generation baker Matt Debruin said.
“There are other bakeries in the competition who get it all delivered and don’t make it on-site, that’s what makes the difference.
“People travel to us for that reason.”
The sporty, health-oriented family say they are hardly temped by all the fresh bread and treats around.
“After baking for so long, the last thing you want to eat is bread,” Matt said with a laugh.
