A Berwick girl, 10, is recovering in hospital after she was mauled by the family dog.
It is believed the girl and her sister were home alone when the incident occurred, just after 8pm on 4 March.
Neighbours reportedly heard screams from the Skyline Way property shortly and rushed in to find the girl being attacked.
It is understood they distracted the dog, believed to be a bullmastiff, and cared for the child until paramedics arrived.
The girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition with bites to her neck, legs, arms and face.
A hospital spokeswoman said as of this morning, she was in a stable condition.
A Victoria Police spokesman confirmed the incident and said the City of Casey had seized the dog involved.
He said the council was continuing to investigate the matter.
