A blundersome school zone adjoining the rear of Nar Nar Goon Primary School has drawn the ire of motorists and parents.

The 40km/h stretch on Longwarry Road has remained in operation, despite the nearby school access being closed for 18 months.

However, Main Street – a hotspot for crossing students – remains 60km/h.

Residents observed that the school crossing signs on Longwarry Road appear “weathered” and “neglected”, suggesting they have been forgotten about.

Margaret Woods said the current signage is “completely backwards”.

“The school zone should be on Main Street and the 60km/h area should be switched to Longwarry Road,” she said.

“It doesn’t seem like a mistake – more just that the council hasn’t realised that entrance of the school isn’t used anymore.

“Main Street is quite dangerous for the kids because there are a lot of cars passing through to neighbouring towns and schools at that time.”

The road serves as a popular connection between Bald Hill Road and the Princes Highway, attracting more traffic than an ordinary regional street.

Another resident, Karen Lawlor, described it as a serious safety concern.

“It’s a serious accident waiting to happen at school time,” she said.

“That is an incredibly dangerous intersection with increased traffic from Chario Christian School parents not wanting to use Bald Hill Road.”

The 40km/h speed limits operate from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm.

According to locals, those limits are often ignored.

“I think it’s at the point where nobody even acknowledges them on Longwarry anymore,” Ms Woods said.

Cardinia Shire has been contacted for comment.
