A serious crash has brought the Monash Freeway to a standstill, with city-bound commuters advised to take an alternate route.

Emergency services are on scene between Blackburn Road and Forster Road, with delays mounting as early as Springvale Road.

The accident occurred at 12.55pm, and early indications suggest an occupant needed to be rescued.

VicRoads advises motorists to exit the city bound lanes of the Monash Freeway at Stud Road, Jacksons Rd, Wellington Road or Springvale Road and use the Princes Highway instead.

It is not yet known when the road will be cleared.
