Berwick and Upper Beaconsfield’s Red Cross has led a fundraising charge to support the Indonesian Appeal on the home stretch to the New Year.

Moved by the harrowing natural disasters – including an earthquake and a tsunami – volunteers have taken to the streets to lend a helping hand.

The group recently raised $460 at a sweets street stall in High Street, Berwick.

As of the branch’s latest annual general meeting, members have raised $7,500 for disaster relief charities.

Publicity officer Glenys Collins said it has been a fulfilling campaign to assist those in dire need.

“We have really had a busy year of fund raising as there are always calls for funds for disaster relief, both here at home and abroad,” she said.

“We’re hoping to finish the year strong and really do this busy year justice.”

She said the group are always looking for new members.

Meetings are held on the second Friday of every month at 10am in Berwick’s RSL Hall.

This week, members will be serving refreshments at the Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank at the Narre Warren North Community Hall.

Appointments can now be made by ringing the Blood Bank on 131495 to check locations and times that you can donate.
