Survey seeks answers on bushfires

By Mitchell Clarke

The Gippsland Strategic Bushfire Management Plan (GSBMP) has been introduced to manage the risk of bushfires on public and private land across the region. Chair of the GSBMP Planning Committee Peter West said the plan was developed by the Safer Together Planning Team who used bushfire science and technology while consulting with a number of land and fire agencies, stakeholders and the overall Gippsland community.

“We’ve already conducted three surveys to find out what’s important to our communities and the approaches they prefer for managing fuels on both public and private land in Gippsland,” Mr West said.

“Over 700 people participated and the information provided has helped inform the proposed strategy which we believe gives us the best approach to managing bushfire risk in Gippsland into the future.

“Our latest survey is asking for community feedback on whether they think we’ve got the fuel management strategy right and to comment on proposed fire management zones for specific areas they are familiar with.”

The survey can be accessed at https://engage.vic.gov.au/bushfire-planning/gippsland and will be available until Monday 12 August.

People who aren’t able to access internet or computer technology are able to obtain hardcopies of the survey by calling the Strategic Fire Management Team on 5152 0600.
