A 12-year-old boy has been airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a car in Pakenham.

It’s believed the boy was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross the Princes Highway at the intersection of King Street on Wednesday 4 September at 3.30pm.

Ambulance Victoria has confirmed the boy appears to be in a serious condition with suspected head, leg and pelvis injuries. Victoria Police confirmed the injuries were non-life threatening.

The vehicle was being driven by a local woman aged in her 60s who stopped at the scene and rendered assistance.

Pakenham resident Brian Farmer was 30 seconds from home when he witnessed the incident. He immediately ran to help.

Mr Farmer completed his CPR course yesterday and was forced to use his new found skills today.

“It just shows you never know when you’re going to need to use your skills,” he said.

Mr Farmer joined a number of other onlookers who provided help to the victim.

“There was probably about four or five people attending to him,” he said.

“A bloke and I were doing CPR, a girl was doing compressions, it could’ve been a whole lot worse (if people weren’t there).”

It’s believed the boy was riding a bike when he was hit, with Mr Farmer reporting the force of the crash resulted in both wheels of the bike being ejected.

“He hit pretty high up on the car’s windscreen,” he added.

Another eye-witness has told the Gazette of the moment the incident occurred.

“It all happened so fast,” she said.

“I was driving and the kid was crossing, he obviously thought there was enough room for him to go but unfortunately he left too late.

“The vehicle just collided with him and he hit the ground.”

Cardinia Highway Patrol officers are now calling for witnesses following the collision to come forward.
